Care Quality Commission (CQC)

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health and social care services in England.

Their main job is to make sure that these services provide people with safe, effective, compassionate, high-quality care and to encourage them to improve. They do this by:

  • Registering care providers: Before an organisation can provide regulated care services, they must register with the CQC.
  • Monitoring services: The CQC regularly inspects services to check if they are meeting national standards. These inspections can be announced or unannounced
  • Publishing ratings: After an inspection, the CQC gives each service a rating, ranging from ‘Outstanding’ to ‘Inadequate’. These ratings are publicly available, helping people make informed choices about their care
  • Taking action: If a service isn’t meeting the required standards, the CQC has the power to take action, which can include issuing warnings, requiring improvements, or even closing down unsafe services.
  • Listening to feedback: The CQC encourages people who use services, their families, and carers to share their experiences, which helps inform their inspections and identify areas for improvement
