Staff at Spellman Care, a luxury group of care homes in Yorkshire, embraced the spirit of Race Equality Week last week, with a vibrant celebration of cultures from around the world. The week-long event saw staff learning about each other’s traditions, sharing interesting facts, and proudly wearing the flags of their home countries.
The celebration was a melting pot of cultures, with staff from the Philippines, Northern Ireland, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Thailand, and England sharing fascinating insights into their unique backgrounds.
Highlights from the week included:
- Learning about Filipino Christmas traditions: Starting on the 1st of September, Filipinos celebrate the longest Christmas season in the world, filled with carols, family gatherings, and delicious food.
- Discovering Northern Irish delights: From the iconic Tayto crisps to the majestic Titanic from Belfast, staff explored the rich history and cultural touchstones of Northern Ireland.
- Exploring the diverse tapestry of Nigeria: With over 250 ethnic groups and 500 languages, Nigeria’s cultural richness was on full display, with staff sharing stories about their traditions and customs.
- Unveiling the wonders of Zimbabwe: From the breathtaking Victoria Falls to the country’s vibrant cultural heritage, staff painted a picture of Zimbabwe’s unique beauty and history.
- Experiencing the warmth of Thai culture: The “Land of Smiles” lived up to its name, with staff sharing stories about the famous water fight festival and the importance of kindness and respect in Thai culture.
- Celebrating English traditions: From fish and chips and Yorkshire puddings to the love of real ale and scenic walks, staff proudly shared their favourite aspects of English culture.
“Race Equality Week is a chance for us to celebrate the diversity that makes our community so strong,” said Philippa Young, Operations Manager at Spellman Care. “This year’s celebrations were a fantastic opportunity for our staff to learn about each other’s cultures, break down barriers, and build stronger friendships.”
