Spellman Care and Dementia Friendly Keighley Celebrate Successful Dementia Awareness Event

Spellman Care and Dementia Friendly Keighley are pleased to announce the resounding success of their free Dementia Awareness Talk, held on Wednesday, 21st May, at Springbank Care Home in Silsden. The event, timed during Dementia Action Week, welcomed numerous community members eager to learn more about dementia.

The one-hour session, led by experienced trainer Lynne from Dementia Friendly Keighley, provided valuable insights into understanding dementia. Attendees, who ranged from local businesses to individuals and relatives of those recently diagnosed, gained a clearer understanding of what dementia is, its various types, and how it impacts daily life and brain functions.

The interactive talk covered key indicators of dementia, offering practical strategies for making daily life easier for people living with the condition. Participants also learned effective communication techniques and were provided with information on where to find additional support, including details about Dementia Friendly Keighley’s ongoing services.

“We were delighted to see such a strong turnout from our local community, and we extend our sincere gratitude to Lynne Carter for her fantastic work in leading this incredibly informative session,” said Lisa Pickles, Home Manager at Springbank Care Home. “The engagement and enthusiasm from attendees truly highlight the importance of these awareness sessions. As a provider of dementia care, it was incredibly rewarding to extend our commitment to the community by facilitating this valuable learning experience.”

Among the attendees was Dr. Lachmann from Ilkley and Wharfedale Medical Practice. Dr. Lachmann commented, “Attending this dementia awareness talk was incredibly beneficial for our administrative and management teams, providing them with practical insights into supporting patients and their families. As a doctor, it was particularly valuable to hear firsthand how relatives of those with dementia are affected by the condition in their daily lives. Furthermore, it was a pleasure to visit a local care home and learn about the incredible, person-centred care offered at Springbank.”

Spellman Care and Dementia Friendly Keighley are committed to continuing their efforts to raise awareness and support for individuals living with dementia and their families, and invite anyone with questions surrounding dementia, or the care industry in general, to get in touch.
