Spellman Care is delighted to announce a partnership with Dementia Friendly Keighley to host a free educational talk on dementia at their Springbank Care Home during the upcoming Dementia Action Week. This informative session is open to all members of the local community and is specifically designed for individuals with little to no prior knowledge of dementia.
Whether you are a local business aiming to become more dementia-friendly, an individual seeking to better understand dementia, or a relative of someone recently diagnosed, this talk offers valuable insights within a supportive environment.
The one-hour session will be held at Springbank Care Home, a Spellman Care home in Silsden, on Wednesday, 21st May 2025, from 1.45pm to 2.45pm.
Experienced trainers from Dementia Friendly Keighley, a local charity dedicated to transforming how communities think, talk, and act about dementia, will lead the session. Drawing upon their “expertise by experience,” many of their champions have personal connections to dementia.
Lynne Carter, representing Dementia Friendly Keighley commented “Finding out that you or someone you love has dementia is a big challenge but at Dementia Friendly Keighley we’re here with support and social interaction at any stage in your dementia journey.
There are practical steps and changes in the way you communicate that can really help someone with dementia. Our awareness sessions help you learn about these.”
Attendees will gain an understanding of what dementia is, clarifying the term and its underlying causes. They will also learn to recognise key indicators of dementia and discover tangible ways to make daily life easier for people living with the condition. The session will also cover developing strategies for communicating effectively with individuals who have dementia and provide information about where to find additional support, including details about Dementia Friendly Keighley.
The talk will cover the prevalence of dementia in the UK, different types of dementia, and how it can affect various brain functions. Through practical examples and discussions, attendees will learn simple yet effective changes in the environment and communication techniques that can significantly improve the lives of individuals living with dementia.
“Springbank Care Home is delighted to welcome Dementia Friendly Keighley and our local community for this important awareness session,” states April Howie, Deputy Manager. “Supporting our community is at the heart of what we do, and as a dedicated provider of dementia care, offering a supportive and welcoming atmosphere for learning feels like a natural and valuable extension of that commitment.
