Spellman Care’s First Veterans’ Café a Resounding Success

Spellman Care is celebrating the overwhelming success of its first regular Veterans’ Café, held at Springbank Care Home in Silsden on Wednesday, 29th January. The event saw a fantastic turnout of veterans, their families, and members of the local community, exceeding all expectations.

Among the distinguished attendees were Martin Flint-Johnson from the Veterans Covenant Healthcare Alliance, Jason Sands, a member of the Ilkley Armed Forces Breakfast Club and representative of SSAFA, and members of the Ilkley Armed Forces Breakfast Club headed by Mark Sugrue. Their presence underscored the importance of such initiatives in supporting and connecting with the veteran community. Dave Calder from the Ilkley Armed Forces Breakfast Club also attended, proudly displaying his intricate matchstick crest depicting the Royal Catering Corps emblem.

The café provided a warm and welcoming atmosphere for veterans to connect, share stories, and enjoy refreshments. A highlight of the afternoon was witnessing one resident exchanging words in a language learnt during the war with a visitor, showcasing the positive impact of the café on reminiscence and wellbeing.

“We are absolutely delighted with the response to our first Veterans’ Café,” said Nicola Cromwell, one of Spellman Care’s Armed Forces Champions. “It was truly inspiring to see so many people come together, connect, and share their experiences. The atmosphere was incredible, and it reinforced the vital role these cafés play in fostering a sense of community and belonging.”

The success of the first café has spurred excitement for future events. Plans are already underway for the next Veterans’ Café, which will be held on Monday, 24th February, from 2:00 PM at Steeton Court Nursing Home. Organisers are planning to display a wide range of military memorabilia and expect even more guests from the local community.

Spellman Care emphasises that the Veterans’ Cafés are open to everyone. No prior military service is required to attend. Whether you knew someone who served, served yourself, or simply wish to reminisce about national service or other related topics, all are welcome.

“These cafés are about more than just veterans,” added Nicola. “They’re about community, connection, and shared experiences. We encourage everyone to come along, enjoy the atmosphere, and join us in supporting our veterans.”
