Residents at Craven Nursing Home enjoyed a spectacular, impromptu garden party on Wednesday as the home made the most of an unseasonably warm spring day. Only 71 days into 2026, the bright sunshine offered a delightful taste of summer, prompting the team to move a scheduled musical performance outdoors into the home’s stunning grounds.
The afternoon featured the talented Craig Carlisle, who delighted the audience with a nostalgic journey through the classics, from the rock ‘n’ roll hits of Elvis to the timeless melodies of The Beatles. One particularly touching moment saw a resident take the lyrics of “I Want to Hold Your Hand” literally, reaching out to hold Craig’s hand during the performance, much to the delight of those watching.
To celebrate Nutrition and Hydration Week, residents stayed refreshed with a variety of vibrant, homemade fruit smoothies and juices which they were supported to make earlier in the day, providing a healthy and delicious accompaniment to the outdoor festivities.
Steph Bowers, Home Manager at Craven Nursing Home, commented: “It was a truly lovely afternoon, and seeing the residents so happy and engaged is what we strive for every day. Beyond the joy of the music, the health benefits of spending time in the fresh air and soaking up some natural Vitamin D are so important for the well-being of the elderly. Our residents are already looking forward to spending much more time outdoors as the nicer weather approaches. We are incredibly lucky to have such peaceful, stunning gardens where the flowers are already starting to flourish, complemented by those beautiful, calming views of the canal at the rear of the home.”
The decision to move the event outside was a testament to the quick thinking of the home’s dedicated team, who wanted to ensure the residents didn’t miss a second of the glorious sunshine.
Activity Coordinators, Katie and Maria, added in a joint statement: “As soon as we saw the sun, it seemed like the obvious thing to do to move the activity outside. Craig Carlisle’s performance was absolutely amazing, and it was wonderful to see everyone enjoying their Nutrition and Hydration Week smoothies in the garden rather than the lounge. We are so pleased that the residents had such a fantastic time dancing and singing along; it was a brilliant team effort to pull it all together so quickly.”
As 2026 continues, Craven Nursing Home remains committed to providing enriching, person-centred experiences that celebrate both the community and the beautiful natural surroundings of the home.
