Ghyll Royd Care Home, a part of the family-owned Spellman Care group, recently partnered with Carers Leeds to host a thought-provoking event for local carers. The event featured a comprehensive talk on dementia, offering attendees invaluable insights and practical advice.
The informative session delved into the complexities of dementia, covering topics such as understanding its causes, symptoms, and progression. Attendees gained a deeper understanding of the disease and its impact on individuals and their loved ones. The talk also emphasized the importance of legal planning, including the role of Power of Attorney, to ensure that the wishes of those with dementia are respected.
To illustrate the effects of dementia in a relatable way, the speaker employed the “bookcase analogy.” Imagine a bookcase filled with memories. The bottom shelves hold childhood memories, while the top shelves hold more recent experiences. As dementia progresses, it’s as if the bookcase tilts forward. The newer memories on the top shelves start to slip off, becoming harder to recall. However, the older memories on the bottom shelves remain relatively stable.
It’s important to remember that while cognitive functions may decline, feelings often remain intact, especially when it comes to long-term memories. Even if someone can’t recall a recent event, they may still experience the emotions associated with it. For example, a person with dementia might forget a recent trip out with loved ones, but still feel a sense of happiness or contentment later that day.
Nichola Harrison, Home Manager at Ghyll Royd Care Home, commented, “We are delighted to have hosted this informative event in partnership with Carers Leeds. Dementia is a complex condition that affects many people in our community. By providing carers with the knowledge and support they need, we can help them navigate the challenges they face and ensure that individuals living with dementia receive the best possible care.”
Nikki Pattinson representing Carers Leeds added “By working together as a community, we can provide essential support to those caring for someone with dementia. This event was a valuable opportunity to share information and resources, and to connect with others who are facing similar challenges.”
Beyond the informative presentation, the event provided a valuable platform for carers to connect with one another and share their experiences. Ghyll Royd Care Home contributed to the welcoming atmosphere by offering a variety of delicious refreshments.
Ghyll Royd is looking forward to hosting other open events in the future, including the homes annual Summer Fete on the 14th September from 1pm. If you are interested in attending these, you can find more information online at www.spellmancare.co.uk, or on the homes Facebook Page @GhyllRoydCareHome.
