Spellman Care is delighted to announce its penultimate charity appeal of the year, following an introduction at the Airedale Seniors Collective.
From the 5th October to the 1st November, the care home group is supporting Lions International’s ‘Recycle for Sight’ campaign alongside the local Keighley Lions Club, collecting unused glasses to send overseas to those in need.
The ‘Recycle for Sight’ initiative encourages members of the community to donate unused old spectacles, reading glasses, and sunglasses.
Collection bins have been set up in the reception areas across all four Spellman Care homes throughout October:
- Craven Nursing Home, Keighley Road, Skipton
- Ghyll Royd Care Home, New Ghyll Royd, Guiseley
- Springbank Care Home, Howden Road, Silsden
- Steeton Court Nursing Home, Station Road, Steeton
Once collected across the homes, the spectacles will be handed over to the Keighley Lions Club before being sent to one of the Lions recycling centres in Chichester or at Lions National HQ in Birmingham for sorting. Dedicated volunteers carefully check and select suitable glasses, ensuring that none go to landfill and all usable pairs are recycled. The glasses are then washed and re-graded, working alongside Medico France or distributed directly to overseas locations, to give the gift of sight to children and adults in developing nations, such as patients supported at the Jomo Kenyatta Optical Clinic in Kenya.
This latest partnership came about after the Keighley Lions Club hosted a stall at Spellman Care’s Airedale Seniors Collective event. Designed to bring local organisations, charities, groups and senior citizens together, the Collective is already proving to be a powerful hub for community connection. Supporting Lions International’s campaign highlights how the group is already making vital connections that deliver positive outcomes both in the local area and further afield across the world.
Commenting on the launch of the appeal, Philippa Young, Group Operations Manager at Spellman Care, said:
“We are absolutely delighted to be supporting Lions International’s fantastic ‘Recycle for Sight’ campaign alongside Keighley Lions throughout October. It is wonderful to see our Airedale Seniors Collective initiative already bearing fruit. After meeting the Keighley Lions team when they hosted a stall at our recent gathering, we immediately saw a brilliant opportunity to collaborate. By hosting collection points across all four of our care homes, we hope to gather as many unused specs as possible and help turn unwanted glasses into a life-changing gift of sight for people across the globe, while demonstrating the true value of bringing our local community together.”
