Springbank Care Home in Silsden is inviting local crafters, sewers, and community members to get involved in a creative new initiative by crafting handmade clothes protectors for residents.
Designed as a stylish, discreet, and dignified alternative to traditional clothes protectors, the homemade alternatives allow residents to enjoy meals and drinks comfortably and with peace of mind, in a more comfortable and dignified way. By upcycling pre-loved garments such as colourful blouses, floral tops, and patterned shirts, these protectors blend seamlessly into a resident’s outfit, appearing just like everyday clothing while offering full practical protection.
Each protector is created using the front panel of a garment, keeping features like collars, necklines, and buttoned fronts intact, and is lined with a soft, washable fabric backing. They rest comfortably over the shoulders and chest and fasten neatly around the back of the neck using quick, gentle fastenings such as Velcro strips or press studs, making them easy and comfortable to put on and remove.
The appeal follows a generous donation from Wendy Brown, who became the first person to support the initiative by creating and donating a fantastic collection of handmade clothes protectors to Springbank residents. Her upcycled creations feature vibrant floral blouses, bright pink and turquoise garments, and a stylish black-and-white daisy print design complete with a rounded collar.
Lisa Pickles, Home Manager at Springbank Care Home, said: “We are so grateful to Wendy for her wonderful donation, which has already made such a positive difference for our residents. Preserving dignity and independence during mealtimes is so important, and these beautiful clothes protectors allow residents to enjoy their meals comfortably without compromising on personal style. We would love to welcome more donations from kind-hearted members of our local community who enjoy sewing or upcycling.”
Members of the community who would like to create some clothes from blouses, patterned shirts, or soft washable backing fabrics, are invited to contact the home or drop donations off at reception.
